When is the best time to start orthodontic treatment?

May 17th, 2019

When is the best time to start your orthodontic treatment?

If you asked a person that question, they may say something like Summer, Christmas, or Spring Break.  But the real answer to that question is ANY TIME!! Here at Mack and Hansen Orthodontics, we do our best to make any time a good time for getting your braces or Invisalign.  We do this by being available to you with early morning, late afternoon, and Friday appointments.  Our team is here to meet your needs however we are able to.  With that being said, school is almost out, summer is right around the corner, and it is a great time to schedule your complimentary consultation with us for your smile needs.   Whether you are interested in the Traditional Metal braces, the Forever Gold braces,  Clear braces or Invisalign, we are here to help guide you through the process.  If you aren’t sure what treatment you need, our doctors and staff will help explain how each appliance works and help you decipher through what best fits your lifestyle and needs.

Getting braces in the summer usually is a popular option, as kids are out of school.  With that in mind, summer is also a busy time here at Mack and Hansen Orthodontics, so it is always a good idea to schedule your appointments in advance.  Some people prefer to get their braces in the summer because they think they need downtime to “recover,” but this is not necessary.  Granted, braces and Invisalign can make your teeth a teeny bit sore right at the beginning, but this soreness is nothing that prevents you from being able to go back to school or work.  Taking something like Advil (ibuprofen), Tylenol (acetaminophen), or another type of anti-inflammatory medication can usually control much of the soreness people experience, allowing them to go about their day as usual.  Now there are some foods, as most people know, that you are unable to eat when you have braces because they will cause damage to the appliances.  But the beauty with Invisalign is that you are able to remove your trays when eating, so there are no food restrictions.  That is something a lot of young adults and adults like to consider when choosing the direction they wish to go on their journey to a better smile.

So in summary, you have many options when it comes to bettering your bite and your smile, and there is never a bad time to start!  With summer upon us and potentially more free time available, consider getting yourself or your loved one in for their complimentary consultation to see what treatment may be right for your smile!

Why do I have to avoid eating chips with braces?

February 23rd, 2019

Why do I have to avoid eating chips with braces?

When you get your braces on, it is important to keep in mind not only how to take care of your braces, but also what foods are okay to eat with your braces, and what foods you should avoid. One of the most popular types of foods that needs to be avoided while in orthodontic treatment with braces is chips. Any type of hard and crunchy food is something you will want to avoid while wearing your braces. Chips like Fritos, Doritos, Tostitos, Cheetos, Takis, as well as pretzels and other hard breads are foods that can not only damage your wire, but also cause your brackets to break.

How can chips and hard breads (such as pizza crust) mess up my wire?

Well, we are glad you asked! Especially in the early stages of your braces treatment, the wires in your mouth are really flexible. As such, if you were to be eating chips and salsa from your favorite restaurant, when you bite down, the chips can cause these light and flexible wires to bend, and put permanent deformations in your wire, or even break the wire entirely!

What are some other types of foods to avoid while in orthodontic treatment with braces?

Chips and hard breads are not the only foods that should be avoided while in treatment. Peanuts should also be avoided during treatment. Sticky foods like taffy can get stuck around the brackets on the teeth and you may be unable to clean the taffy off.

What are some foods that I am able to eat?

As a general rule, softer foods will be better while in orthodontic treatment with both braces and invisalign. Foods like mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and pasta are going to be both more comfortable to eat while in treatment and also not cause any broken brackets, invisalign attachments, or orthodontic wires.
